High-forested ridges nestle remote tribal villages with their surrounding irrigated fields. Visit monasteries, hot springs and waterfalls; wander among paddies and villages close to the town. There is a good range of day walks to choose from, and we can also arrange overnighters also, staying with the villagers or in small, very basic guesthouses.
Day treks keep you on level ground and away from any major ascents of the surrounding hills, but still allow visits to some friendly Palaung and Pedung villages. You begin by walking across large fields to the edge of the mountains, eventually reaching a hot spring. The day is then spent walking from village to village, with rest stops along a pretty river. You can visit a cheroot factory, where a half dozen women hand-roll about a thousand of the Burmese cigars each day – free samples provided.
