Ngapoli is doubtless Burma’s principal beach resort – and quite rightly so. But, if you want to experience something a little different and considerably more remote, then the Ngwe Saung might be just up your street. You need to put in the work to get here – no airport, so it’s a long and tedious drive through the Irrawaddy Delta from Yangon – but the rewards are considerable. Eight uninterrupted miles of pure white sand and clear waters, minimal development beyond a handful of low-key resorts and a distinct lack of tourists. A true beach escape.
Ngwe Saung is a great choice for those looking for more than just a palm-fringed beach, as the nearby fishing villages are well worth a visit, and there’s good snorkelling to be enjoyed at the southern end of the beach.
